Dietary management is a crucial part of treating liver cancer. A balanced diet ensures proper nutrition, enhances liver function, strengthens the immune system, boosts physical energy, and helps reduce the side effects of chemotherapy.


Meal Planning


Instead of eating large meals at once, develop the habit of eating small portions 5 to 6 times a day. This will help maintain energy levels and reduce nausea.

Emphasis should be placed on nutritious foods because liver cancer and its treatment reduce appetite and hinder nutrient absorption. Lightly cooked foods should be consumed to minimize stress on the liver and digestive system.


Lean Protein


Fish: Ocean fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines, or local fish like hilsa and surma, help reduce inflammation.

Poultry: Skinless chicken or turkey is a good source of lean protein.


Plant-based protein: Lentils, beans, tofu, and quinoa are good alternatives to animal protein. They are easy to digest for the liver.


Eggs: A good source of protein, and should be consumed in moderation if there are no cholesterol-related issues.


Healthy fats:


Olive oil: Rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation.


Avocado: Provides fiber and healthy fats, aiding digestion.


Nuts and seeds: Nuts, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds are nutrient-dense and provide omega-3s.


Complex carbohydrates:


Whole or whole-grain cereals: Brown rice, quinoa, oats, and wheat products aid digestion and provide energy gradually.


Antioxidant-rich foods:


Colorful vegetables, such as carrots, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, and vegetables rich in beta-carotene and vitamin C, help detoxify the liver.


Berries are also rich in antioxidants. Green tea contains catechins, which enhance liver function.


Water and fluids:


Water: Unless advised otherwise by a doctor, at least 8 cups of water should be consumed daily.

Herbal tea: Dandelion and milk thistle tea are beneficial for the liver.


What to avoid:


Fried foods, refined sugar, carbohydrates, red meat, processed foods, and alcohol should be avoided.


Vitamins and supplements:


Liver cancer patients may need supplements for nutrients such as vitamin D, B12, iron, or zinc. It is advisable to consult a doctor or nutritionist regarding this. Many patients may face fluid retention (ascites) issues. Avoiding processed and salty foods and reducing sodium intake helps control this problem.
