"Imran Khan sentenced to 14 years in prison in a corruption case." |
A Pakistani court has sentenced Prime Minister Imran Khan to 14 years in prison in a corruption case. The sentence was given on Friday, according to Pakistani broadcaster ARY News. The corruption court in a prison in the garrison city of Rawalpindi delivered the verdict. Imran Khan has been imprisoned there since August 2023.
The case, known as the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case, resulted in a 14-year prison sentence for Imran Khan and a 7-year sentence for Bushra Bibi. They were also fined. Allegations have been made that they misused government power for personal gain in the Al-Qadir University project led by them. The court fined Imran Khan 1 million Pakistani rupees and Bushra Bibi 500,000 rupees.
Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the sentence, stating, "The prosecution has proven the charges in its case. Imran Khan has been found guilty."
Imran Khan, who served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022, has been accused of engaging in corruption through a project under the name of the Al-Qadir Trust. For this project, he received land from a wealthy individual named Malik Riaz, which was later established as a charitable educational institution.
However, the project is alleged to have been used for political purposes and is accused of laundering over 239 million dollars. After a no-confidence motion passed against him in 2022, Imran Khan was removed from power. Since then, several cases have been filed against him. Imran Khan's lawyer, Faisal Farid Chowdhury, has described this verdict as politically motivated.
