"Israeli Operation in Jenin Leaves 10 Dead" |
At least 10 people have been killed in an Israeli attack on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, according to Al Jazeera, citing the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Additionally, during an operation in the West Bank city of Qalqilya, Israeli forces detained over 60 people.
The BBC, also quoting the Palestinian Ministry of Health, reported that nine people were killed and 35 injured during the Israeli operation in Jenin.
Palestinian media reported that Israel conducted continuous airstrikes in Jenin city and its refugee camp using drones and helicopters. Since Tuesday morning, a large Israeli force, equipped with armored bulldozers, has been conducting operations in the city.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the operation as a “comprehensive and significant campaign to counter terrorism in Jenin.”
Just three days after a ceasefire was enforced in Gaza, this operation in Jenin raises concerns of escalating conflict across the West Bank. Israeli settlers reportedly caused havoc in Jenin overnight.
Kamal Abu Al-Rub, the governor of Jenin, told AFP, “What is happening in the Jenin refugee camp is an assault. They came in swiftly, with Apaches in the air and Israeli military vehicles everywhere.”
According to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, citing local sources, the Israeli forces have taken full control of the Jenin refugee camp and have dug up several roads using armored bulldozers.
Before launching their operation in the camp, Israeli forces reportedly withdrew members of the Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces from the area. A photograph taken on January 18 shows PA security personnel departing the camp.
Dr. Wisam Bakr, the director of Jenin's government hospital, told WAFA that among the injured were three doctors and two nurses, all hit by Israeli gunfire.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed on Tuesday evening that eight men and a 16-year-old boy were killed in the operation. Another person was killed by Israeli forces in the village of Ti'anik, 8 kilometers northwest of Jenin.
Brigadier General Anwar Rjoub, spokesperson for the PA security forces, stated that Israeli forces indiscriminately fired on civilians and security personnel, causing significant casualties.
